got 5 minutes?

go to 5min.com! this is a do-it-yourselfer's dream. (i, being a do-it-myselfer, personally love this website :)
this website allows people to upload how-to videos on just about anything. the videos give advice, instructions, and other lessons in five minutes or less. of course, you could go to youtube and search "how to make a balloon sword" until you found a legit video, or you could easily go to 5min, click on the arts section, and click balloons to find out how to make just about any balloon animal!
there are tons of categories including cooking recipes, travel tips, and game rules.

Control Panel

i can remember when i was like 13 years old, i was on a computer at my school library and i saw something that caught my eye.
the cursor.
the cursor was no longer a boring little white thing with a point, but a walking dinosaur.
since that moment, i was determined to find out how to change my cursor to a dinosaur.

i went home that day and played around on my computer until i found the "mouse" section in control panel. using pointer options tab, you can change what each of your cursors look like. (of course, if you use the walking dinosaur it will slow down your computer a considerable amount) you can also change other preferences- even switch the right and left click buttons, or change the speed of your mouse.

there are a few options for changing the way your cursor works, and you can also download many other cute or animated cursors. i still love changing my mouse and right now my little cursor is rainbow :)

St. Joseph's- Green is the new Red

The green movement is really catching on at St.joseph's Academy!
We all seem to be making a conscience effort to recycle and keep our environment clean.
Because we use laptops, it would seem that we would use a lot less paper than regular schools.
i wonder if this is true. because we have an unlimited access to printers, we can print whenever, whatever we want. this results in a lot of paper being wasted. even though we recycle the paper, it still doesnt change the fact that a tree was cut down to make the paper and we wasted it.

greenprint world is a download that can help us along our green movement and save even more paper. before you print a document, this program scans the paper and removes unwanted pages or images. if you print a screen from the internet, it will automatically remove ads or pages with a single line of text.

as another extra thing- it keeps a record of how much money and paper you are saving! if everyone at st.joseph's used this service, think of how much ink, money, and paper we would save......

MY NEW FAVORITE WEBSITE!

GUBB!!!!!
i am obsessed with making lists. my friends all make fun of me because whenever i get an idea, i start making a list with all of my ideas or things i need to remember :) the only way i remember things is if i write them down... i have to make list every day with my homework and for my schedule of the week.

gubb.com is the perfect website for me! i just added it to my favorites :) its an easy way to make an organize your own list! you can change colors and coordinate the list and check things off. i've already made 15 lists! you can even get your list texted to your phone or sent to you in an email. it has pre-made example list for many different topics, but you can make your own personal lists.

startuplite

StartUpLite is a software that can disable or remove all known unnecessary startup entries from your system. this can make your start up and other procedures on your computer faster. all you have to do is download it and run it to disable programs that arent needed and basically degunk your computer! just a few clicks will eliminate what you dont need. i downloaded it to my desktop and tried it, the only bad thing is that you have to restart your computer after everytime you clear the system.

we all love quoting people..

recently, i searched my dad- Mickey Guidry- on pipl.com.
many many results came up and i'm actually jealous of my dad's popularity on google! (he even has a picture on google images!)
when i get bored and google my name, nothing really comes up..

but one of the links that came up from searching his name was to thinkexist.com
this is a website full of quotations! you can easily search a person or author and find quotes by them, rate them, or even upload your own quotes.
my dad wrote a book on football years ago, and he had three quotes on the website! i thought that was pretty cool.. and i also found a new website that easy to find quotations from!

PEOPLE!

pipl.com is a seach engine that allows you to search a person by their first name, last name, city, state, and country.
according to the site, pipl searches in the "deep web" to find more results and content
because of such specific details in the search, you usually can find whoever you want easily.
i searched myself and st. joseph's website came up, my blog came up, my facebook came up, and my dance studio website came up!
this is a cool search engine, but kind of creepy!
i searched my mom and our address came up along with our phone numbers..and even gave a map to where my house is!

Google latitude

if you have a google account (for st. josephs students, you log in with your netsja email and password), then you can access google latitude.
it claims that you can find out where your friends are exactly on a map.

i tried to play around with it a bit, and figured out that the only way you can find out where your friends are is if you are friends with them on igoogle. then, they have to set the privacy settings to allow you to actually search for them and see a map locating where they are.

basically, google latitude sounds cooler than it really is. you have to actually enter where you are and update the address any time you move from that spot. that is they only way someone can actually locate you. i guess if you were a parent wanting to keep track of where your child is at all times you could ask them to stay logged into igoogle and update their location everytime they move?

tHe CoOlEsT tHiNg On CoNtRoL PaNeL

text to speech.
it's so neat!
anything you type, the computer will say!

start, control panel, Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices, Speech, Text to speech tab!

there is a little box where you can type and click preview voice to hear your computer speak! some of the words he cannot pronounce/read, which can result in some really funny sounds! i fooled around with this for literally 45 minutes after i discovered it! you can also control the speed that the voice talks, and that makes it even funnier. i even looked up some things to type in the text box that are funny- theres one that sounds exactly like a helicopter :D

theres only one voice on my computer- Microsoft Sam. but i saw some websites where you can download other voices (such as the female voice)

i have no idea what the point of this being on your computer is; i only see it as a fun way to entertain myself or procrastinate :) - if you try it yourself, type the word SOY SOY SOY!

My Top Ten App List :)

1. Shazam- this is the best application ever. If you hear a song playing and you don’t know the name of it, all you have to do is SHAZAM it. When you press the shazam button, the phone records a section of the song playing and tells the name, artist, album, etc. of the song.
2. Movies- By simply entering information like your area code, you can find a complete list of movies playing at specific theatres along with times, ratings, and more.
3. Facebook- A simple version of facebook, this app allows you to access the bare necessities of facebook; faster than logging on through safari.
4. Pandora- When you type in your favorite artist, the app will play a selection of songs related to that genre of music.
5. Whats on- provides information about movies and shows that are showing on T.V. such as times and channels.
6. Lose it- a diet plan application that tells the recommended amount of calories a person should intake after entering information such as height, age, and current weight.
7. Monkeyball- one of the most fun games on an iphone, you physically tilt the screen to increase speed and change direction of the ball as it rolls throughout the course.
8. Urbanspoon- a quick way to find restaurants available in your area
9. Backgrounds- application that allows you to download pictures and set them as your background on your iphone
10. Flashlight- by pulling up this app, the screen of your iphone will turn to a blank screen in the color of your choice, white being the color that will shine the brightest light and serve as a “flashlight”

summer reading could now become summer listening?

When I created an account on emusic.com, I received 50 free downloads and a free audio book. This was the first time I had heard of such a thing. This website seems to have hundreds of books titles I could get for free (silas marner? i think yes.) as i said in my last post, i learn the best by listening. putting a audio version of a book on my ipod could be very convenient..

podcast

I use podcast all of the time. Mrs. Phebus actually creates podcasts of her lectures in biology. She posts them on moodle.com (the website she uses for organizing our class documents instead of using blackboard) and we download them to study. i am a person who learns the best through hearing. i listen to her audio podcast and watch her video podcast and they are seriously the reason i pass that class. I also have gotten podcasts off of itunes.

youtube

I loveeee youtube! I think it is absolutely brilliant. You can search any random word and find hundreds of videos. It think the most fascinating thing about youtube is how you can literally become a CELEBRITY. So many people have spent a couple minutes making a video, they post it on youtube, and soon they have millions of fans. It is so crazy.

there is a show on mtv that discusses some of the best music videos ever made. one of the more modern songs is "here it goes again" by okgo. youtube actually seriously helped okgo's career! OK Go's treadmill-choreographed music video is among the winners in the first YouTube Video Awards.

rollyo and delicious and tagging

I actually think this is really cool. I had never heard of anything like this. I made an account http://www.rollyo.com/tess3112/ and a “searchroll” (for some acting websites I use often).
i also made a delicious account (http://delicious.com/tess3112 ) and now I have all of my bookmarks saved. So when I get my computer reimaged, I will have them all saved on this sight!!

If I am looking for something particular, I can search a word and see what things have been tagged with that word. It helps to specify my searches.
If you tag your post with popular keywords, then more people will search them, find them, and read your blogs. Technorati is another blogging tool besides blogger that you can become a part of it and search for entire blog post using key words.

library thing

· I have never cataloged books before, but I love books. I cataloged of few of my favorites. (http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?view=tess3112&deepsearch=) I collect old books and I have them all over my room. My mom also loves books and we have a library in our house with hundreds of books. She would probably be interested in this website and I will share it with her so she can catalog her own books.

flickr

· I already have a flickr account. I use it to get my photography and art seen. Photobucket is fast and convenient for uploading pictures if you want to get the link to put on your myspace or facebook. When I want to share photos with friends or family, I prefer flickr. It is more organized and has less advertisement.
· Jim Bumgardner, or “Jbum” on flickr, created his own program called “flickr color picker.” By clicking on any color on the color wheel, it shows pictures that have been uploaded on flickr that match that exact color.

Computer Architecture

woohoo!
i finished the projectt
even though it took a while, i think it was interesting to discover so many different sites that i probably wouldn't have found on my own.
i have actually shown people some of the things i've learned and their first reaction is "how do you find these?!"
even my mom thought the library catalogue site was cool :)

EARTH HOUR 2009!

its that time again!
they are calling it the "election between earth and global warming"

wwf (world wildlife fund) wants you to "VOTE EARTH" by hitting the lightswitch.

on saturday, march 28 at 8:30 PM, people all over the world will be turning off their lights for one hour to participate in this special night.
it has such a powerful effect when we see some of the worlds most famous manmade landmarks (such as the sydney opera house) turn out the power in this global iconic earth hour.

support our PLANET and turn off your lights for this hour. save a few cents in the electricy bill :) save the world. get all the details at http://www.panda.org/how_you_can_help/greenliving/climate_forests_oceans/what_you_can_do/earth_hour/

who is tess guidry?

despite the title of this blog, i am not going to type a personal biography that answers the question "who is tess guidry?" (even know im sure you are all dying to know.. haha)

im just promoting a website as usual- http://www.whoishim.com/

as humans in the 21st century, we all enjoy a good search. admit it.
we get bored and we go to google and type our name or our best friends name and we see what pages come up.

then we go back and google image our name :)

basically this site is just an easy way to search a person by their first and last name and find all of the different external links where it is possible to find information about that person.

its divided into categories like social, profiling, etc. so you can find the person on myspace, facebook, or even our new favorite- TWITTER!

have fun

voc

we all know we love those ORANGE VOCAB BOOKS!
we love doing all of the exercizes, memorizing the synonyms and antonyms, and writing our own sentences to practice for the test!
but sometimes we need that extra help in studying.
we need a practice test!
www.vocabtest.com is a website that has practices to help us study.
this is not cheating.
this is another alternative to making flashcards :) which of course we should do anyway.
they even provide help with learning and understanding stress marks, which has always been the hardest part for me..

so before your next 20, 40 (or if you are in honors, 60) word vocabulary test, visit this site and see if it helps you.

healthy food :)

i love nutrition. it has always fascinated me for some reason. i am also a dancer, so eating healthy and keeping my body in shape is critically important.

one of my dance trainers and former golden girl captain, blair buras, is a dietitian. The dedication she has to dance and to her work is very inspired and motivating! since we are all bloggers, i thought it might be interesting to share her blog with you. the link is http://deliciouslygolden.blogspot.com/

she has AMAZING recipes and great advice on eating right so i deffinitely suggest just giving it a look. i promise the photographs alone will make you want to be food savvy and eat healthy!

where theres a will, theres a well

benjamin leblanc (from chs) and aubrey allison (from sja) got a grant for their project H20 or Helping Hydrate Others. you may have heard of this because there was recently a story on the st. joseph's website home page. basically what they are doing is working with 410 bridge organization to build a well in kenya that will provide water to africans living there.

this is a big deal! its great how people in our community finally stop TALKING about changing the world and start DOING.

there are a ton of students besides ben and aubrey who are involved in this. everyone can help in a way. there are t-shirts that can be purchased for $20 or you can actually donate money online through this link https://www.kintera.org/AutoGen/Simple/Donor.asp?ievent=302644&en=epLDKMMuHfKHLSNEKbLFJ0MBI8LFLUMyGdKRL6MMG.
what truly helps the most is spreading this news and getting this project popular so more people will donate and make building this well possible!

go to helpinghydrateothers.org. support your fellow students and friends. and save african babies :)

free emusic

emusic.com is an online music store.
it is different from itunes in the way that you can download unlimited music but you are charged a certain fee each month.
i am not a subscriber, but if you do subscribe then you get 50 songs for free with new entry.
(plus a free audiobook :] )

what i do have is a free download each day.
if you download the emusic toolbar for free, then you are qualified for a pre-chosen free daily download. i love it because i am supporting new and different bands by downloading music i have never listened to or heard of before. if you dont want the emusic toolbar to show on your internet browser, simply right click the bar and uncheck "eMusic Toolbar"

the free song i get everyday for 365 days was worth the two minutes it took me to download the toolbar. i recommend it!

WG

ever wonder where the money in your pocket has been?
wheresgeorge.com is a website that tracks paper money!
you may have possibly seen a bill with a stamp or writing that says "track this bill at www.wheresgeorge.com"
thats how i found out about the site.
you can sign up and become a member for free and then begin tracking bills!
all you have to do is simply enter the code from the bill and what type of bill it is ($1, $5, etc)
then you mark the physical bill itself.
then finally use the currency and send it out into the world!
if another person finds it and enters it on the website, you will be notified and you can see where your dollar is being used.

the first bill i found had been used and entered in ohio, then alabama, then belle chase here in louisiana. since then i have entered only about three more of my own bills but i am hopeful that someone will find them and enter them!
